Produced from 100% Tinta del Pais vines between 60 to 80 years old planted in a single vineyard with a great variety of soils from clay at the bottom of the slope to gravelly sand at the top.
Fruit was hand-harvested and cluster sorted prior to de-stemming and light crushing. Cooled pre-fermentation maceration helped to attain a deep color and intense fruit aromas. The wine was fermented with native yeasts and saw additional time with skins post fermentation. There were no other additions except sulfites at bottling. The wine was aged for 8 months in 225 liter barrels prior to assembling the final blend.
(aged for eight months in 80 percent French and 20 percent American oak barrels, one-third of them new) Inky purple. Smoke-accented blue fruit and violet pastille aromas, along with hints of incense and licorice. Sappy black raspberry and blueberry flavors smoothly blend richness and vivacity and pick up a spicy nuance as the wine stretches out. Closes smooth, long and appealingly sweet, featuring sneaky tannins and an echo of ripe blue fruit.
